This page contains information about web safe colours. What names and numbers can you use so they will display the same across different systems and browsers?

Colour names

This is the set of 16 standard colour names that all browsers recognise.

Many browsers will recognise additional colour names. since there is no guarantee that all browsers recognise other names than the above 16, you are better of using the numbers below for other colours.

Colour numbers

Below you will find a table with 216 web safe colours. These colours should display more or less the same on all operatings systems, in all browsers. Note that no full guarantee can be given that the colours will display the same.

Colour numbers consist of 3 or 6 hexadecimal digits. These are values for the amount of red, green and blue light. these can be defined in 256 steps per colour (0 up to FF) so a total of 16,777,216 colours is available. A colour number for which the two digits per colour are the same, can be abbreviated into three digits. For example, #330099 can be written as #309.

These are examples of 16 greys, ranging from white to black. All colour numbers with equal values for red, green and blue will result in a shade of grey. That means there are 256 shades of grey available.
